L.A. Guns: Loading Up
The “Guns” in Guns N’ Roses, the L.A. Guns have both been
a starting home for music legends and a musical force in their own right. Even
after a revolving door at singer, the L.A. Guns have come to be one of the most
definitive bands of the late 1980s to early ‘90s era. Along with Guns
N’ Roses and Faster Pussycat, L.A. Guns went on to pioneer Sleaze Rock,
a genre that transitioned Glam Metal to Modern Rock.
L.A. Guns: Smelling
Like Roses
After L.A. Guns’ original lead singer went to prison, founder Tracii Guns
worked with Axl Rose to merge the L.A. Guns with Hollywood Rose. The resulting
Guns N’ Roses would go on to be one of the biggest acts in music history.
Before Guns N’ Roses hit it big, Tracii Guns left to reform L.A. Guns.
Both bands shared the same style and image. Instead of the make up and spandex
of Glam bands, the L.A. Guns focused on blue-collar appearance and darker lyrics.
The new sound would carry both Guns N’ Roses and L.A. Guns far into the
1990s as Glam fell by the wayside.
L.A. Guns: Welcome
to the Gun Show
Tracii Guns recruited a new band and L.A. Guns was reborn. After the first of
what would be many singer changes, L.A. Guns was ready to make their mark. Single
“Sex Action” pushed L.A. Guns into the charts for the first time.
The first full-length album L.A. Guns was a landmark album that helped establish
the Sleaze style of music. Single “One More Reason” was another
big hit. With the L.A. Guns sound and look established, the band went on tour.
Other tracks from L.A. Guns that became classics were “Electric Gypsy”
and “Nothing to Lose”.
L.A. Guns: Cocked
& Loaded
New drummer Steve Riley was brought in and put the finishing touches on the
classic L.A. Guns lineup. What the first album established, the second album
Cocked & Loaded would knock out of the park. “The Ballad of Jayne”
would eventually make L.A. Guns platinum superstars. With a classic music video
to go with it “The Ballad of Jayne” took over both TV and the airwaves.
“Never Enough” and particularly “Rip & Tear” became
popular tracks and concert setlist favorites. Due to the videos, singles, and
great touring, Cocked & Loaded became a platinum record and made L.A. Guns
household names.
L.A. Guns: The 1990s-2000s
With genres like Grunge, Industrial, and Alternative Rock starting to bite into
Metal’s popularity, L.A. Guns released their 1991 album Hollywood Vampires.
The
album placed more emphasis on trying to find a hit power ballad than sticking
to the roots of L.A. Guns sleaze-flavored Rock. “Its Over Now” was
a huge hit, even in the face of changing musical tastes in America. “Kiss
My Love Goodbye” also found a home on the charts. Hard-driving tracks
were the highlight of Hollywood Vampires and showed that L.A. Guns still knew
how to punch audiences in the mouth.
After a lineup change which brought in new blood, the L.A. Guns released Vicious Circle in 1995. Vicious Circle was the heaviest L.A. Guns album to date, with a sound closer to modern Metal acts. After the album failed to catch on, a new singer was brought in. The follow-up album American Hardcore was released in 1996 had an even harder edge. After a few more experimental albums, L.A. Guns returned to their roots along with much of their original lineup.
2001 release Man in the Moon was a critic and fan favorite thanks to songs and lyrics that seemed to be true to L.A. Guns and not the brainchild of producers. The song “Beautiful” was especially singled out as a passionate and real song. L.A. Guns followed the album up with another critical darling and fan-pleasing affair in Waking the Dead. The song list on Waking the Dead ran the gambit between a patriotic song “OK, Let’s Roll”, a ballad “The Ballad”, and a pulse-pounding slam song in “Psychopathic Eyes”. The albums were a refreshing return to form for longtime L.A. Guns fans.
L.A. Guns: Rock The
Bayou
With a solid lineup – Tracii Guns (lead guitar), Jeremy Guns (bass), Chad
Stewart (drums), Alec “Big Al” Bauer (rhythm guitar), and Marty
Casey of the hit CBS TV show ROCK STAR INXS (vocals) – and a collection
of new material that does their old work proud, the L.A. Guns are cocked, locked,
and ready to rock in 2008! With Tracii Guns at the helm, the L.A. Guns rocked
thru a 50 date tour with FASTER PUSSYCAT AND BANG TANGO WHICH INCLUDED SEVERAL
FESTIVLAS including Rocklahoma.
