Bang Tango: Formation
Founded in 1987 by singer Joe Leste, guitarists Kyle Stevens and Mark
Knight, bassist Kyle Kyle, and drummer Tig Ketler, Bang Tango was the
first band of its kind. Taking influence from the Los Angeles Heavy Metal
scene, Bang Tango also began to mix the genre with traditional Funk music.
The resulting brew would be a genre onto itself, Funk Metal. The music
Bang Tango made would later be picked up by the likes of the Red Hot Chili
Peppers and the legendary Faith No More. Bang Tango quickly built a fan
following on the L.A. Strip and caught the eyes and ears of record executives
with their live album Live Injection.
Bang Tango: Psycho
Café
Bang Tango’s debut studio album Psycho Café dropped in 1989.
With a sound that did not match anything on MTV at the time, Bang Tango
originally struggled to find radio play and video rotation. By blending
the sounds of Sleaze bands like Faster Pussycat with music in the same
vein as James Brown, Bang Tango had set themselves apart from the crowd.
Eventually, even with the lack of airplay, Bang Tango caught on with critics,
and songs like “Someone Like You” began to draw an audience.
The critically acclaimed Psycho Café helped forge a path for future
bands and musical trends.
Bang Tango: Dancin’
on Coals
In 1991, Bang Tango released their second studio album Dancin’ on
Coals. The experimentation with Funk and Heavy Metal continued on the
record, and the unique Bang Tango sound was refined with singles like
“Dancin’ on Coals” and “Midnight Struck”.
An even bigger hit though, would be Bang Tango’s second live album
Ain’t No Jive…Live!, which debuted at No. 33 on the charts.
1994 studio album Love After Death was another experimental album, while
a live album Live again made a good splash on the charts.
Bang Tango: Rock The
Bayou
Bang Tango will take the stage at Houston, Texas’ own Rock The Bayou
Music Festival – a four-day event spanning Labor Day Weekend 2008,
from August 29-September 1. With their greatest hits in tow, Bang Tango
will join a lineup of over 40 legendary rock bands on the Rock The Bayou
bill.
